Island Journey
Length: 3 hours
Price: $35
This is a very popular tour which offers and excellent overview of the island. The tour goes from south to north and makes the following stops:
- Pink Flamingo Sanctuary: Marking the horizon like scoops of vanilla ice cream the salt mounds provide the perfect home for these romantic birds.
- Slave Huts: A reminder of a very bleak period in the islands history when slaves were brought over from Africa in the 19th Century to work in the saltpans. The huts are incredibly small and bleak; a pertinent reminder of how hard life was back then.
- 1000 Steps: A great photo stop right on the top of the cliff, 67 steps descend to a gorgeous coral sand beach. Why 1000 when there are only 67, who knows?
- Karpata Plantation: The manor house of an 19th Century aloe plantation that was then used as a biological research station for many years.
- Grottomeer: This is definitely the most scenic spot on the island and one of the best places to see the shy flamingoes. It is a truly gorgeous vision of green in the middle of the dessert with the lake at it's center and flamingoes on all sides.
- Rincon: This was the original Spanish settlement on the island, Bonaire's oldest village. It is a higgledy piggeldy collection of pastel colored cottages with a few colonial style buildings. Your stop in Rincon will include a visit to the open-air Cultural Center and Museum, "Magazine di Rei," where you will have a guided tour of typical Bonairean houses from the past, Indian chalk ovens, charcoal making process (still used today), authentic aloe cooker.
- Seroe Largu: The highest point on the island, 394 ft. The ideal place to take pictures of Kralendijik the ship below.
